Mission Statement
The Jamestown Community Farm was organized in Jamestown to allow volunteers in the community and the state the opportunity to grow fresh vegetables and other agricultural products and distribute this produce at no charge to organizations responsible for feeding the poor.
About the Farm
The
Jamestown Community Farm is located on seventeen acres. We cultivate
approximately three acres of the donated land to grow approximately
15,000 pounds of fresh vegetables per season for those in need.
The food is distributed to local agencies in Jamestown, Newport
and South County and in the fall winter squash is donated to the
Jamestown Rotary Club for Thanksgiving food baskets.
During the summer approximately 200 people from ages 3 through 80
volunteer to plant, weed, cultivate, and harvest the vegetables.
Corporations, University groups, student and religious organizations
hold “volunteer field days” at the Community Farm. In addition others donate tractors, tools,
equipment and “snacks” to help get the job done.
Our planting season begins in March by planting seeds in our greenhouse. By April and May we are in the garden planting seedlings and additional seeds in the ground. A compost pile, organic fertilizer and rotating the crops annually help maintain an organic garden that is free from commercial pesticides and herbicides. We look forward to a fruitful harvest by enclosing the garden with deer fencing and relying on the rain from above for irrigation.
The Farm is a place that builds family and community relationships, protects open space and most importantly provides fresh produce for those in need.Join us at the farm anytime on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6 p.m. to dusk and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
